In a French cooking class in Provence, great meals start with fresh products. It is important to know how to select the best produce at the right time of the year. Meet chef Eric in Uzès and take off to explore the local market of the day (Market visited depends on the day of the class – please see the notes below). With your French chef begin your journey into Provencal and Mediterranean cuisines shopping at local producers at a typical French market. Not to worry, our chef speaks English and the class will be conducted in English.
French market day is an essential part of French life, so it is not surprising to see that across France, markets are available at least once a week in just about every village & city district.
During one of our French Cooking Classes in Uzès you’ll enjoy the opportunity to visit three different markets. We are lucky in the Pays d’Uzès to have access to more than one French Market day. We have the opportunity to explore three wonderful local weekly markets for this class.
You will enjoy a tour of the typical French market day in Nîmes, Uzès & Saint Quentin-la-Poterie, selecting the day’s produce to be prepared together at the school. This class is fun, educational and delicious!
Uzès & Saint-Quentin – 8:30 am pick-up in Uzès. Market visit till around 10 am. Hands-on Cooking lesson till 12:30 pm. Sit-down lunch (inside or outside, depending on weather). We’ll drive back to Uzès around 2/2:30 pm.
Nîmes – 8:30 am pick-up in Uzès. Arrive at Les Halles de Nîmes 9:15 am. Market visit and shopping till 10:15 am. We return to the kitchen at about 11 am and will enjoy a pre-cooking apéritif with some of the things we picked up from the market. Hands-on cooking lesson till about 1:30 PM. Sit-down lunch (inside or outside, depending on weather). We’ll drive back to Uzès around 3:30 pm.
We will decide the menu together with the group directly at the market based on what is fresh and in-season. You will learn how to select top quality produce from the market vendors and specialty shop owners to whom you can ask questions and from whom you will likely snag a sample or two – but you won’t want to fill yourself up, there will be plenty of food to come.
After our shopping, we will return to our kitchen, in Arpaillargues (transportation is included*), where we will prepare a 3-course menu from scratch: Appetizer, Main-Course & Dessert. Additionally we will enjoy a wonderful cheese-course and of course we will not forget the wine.
After preparing our meal, we will sit down and enjoy the fruits of our labor giving us an opportunity to discuss the recipes and further get to know one another over a 4-course lunch (cheese included). All our classes also include a traditional French aperitif.
*Note about transportation: We will be meeting in Uzès (details will be included in your confirmation on how to meet your chef). You will be taken either on foot or by car to the market of the day. We will provide transportation back to Uzès at the end of class. Alternatively: If you wish to drive your own car please let us know upon booking so that we may plan accordingly and provide instructions on where to park so we may all leave together.
